With the introduction of two new major characters this season on The Walking Dead, we can certainly expect to see new struggles. Executive producer Gale Anna Hurd teases what we can expect in The Walking Dead season 3.

In an interview yesterday with USA Today, Gale Anne Hurd let us know a few things about what to expect in The Walking Dead season 3. The newspaper also talks to David Morrissey (who plays the Governor), and Danai Gurira, who is the beloved Michonne. There may be some spoilers ahead.

Hurd kicks off by giving us a hint at what the characters are trying to do, which we see in the first sneak peek AMC released Monday.

“Obviously, Lori (Sarah Wayne Callies) is pregnant. They [the survivors] want to settle in. They want to be able to not be living hand-to-mouth, and when they do come across the prison, even though it would not be your or my ideal choice as a place to take up residence, it is fenced in and theoretically it should be equipped with various supplies and, hopefully, food.”

While the group starts to get settled at the prison, Andrea and Michonne end up in the Governor’s idyllic town of Woodbury. And you can expect some tension between the two leaders – Rick and the Governor. David Morrissey explains:

“They are two groups led by two strong-willed people. Will these people be able to negotiate and be able to have goodwill towards each other or see each other as threatening? That’s a very interesting debate to have.”

According to Gurira, being on set with The Walking Dead and dealing with walkers can be disorienting.

“It can get very, very real. They are so beautifully grotesque, and you tend to forget what you’re dealing with. You can step out of make-believe very easily.”

We saw Michonne pick up Andrea at the end of season 2, and the two form a real bond.

“She and Andrea connect. Michonne admires and appreciates her strength, especially in a world where you’re looking for people who bring assets to the table and not liabilities.”

Hurd teases about Merle’s return as well.

“Merle is one of the characters that the fans were most vocal in wanting us to bring back,” says Hurd. “Obviously, he’s got a grudge match. He blames Rick and the rest of the survivors for the loss of his hand, even though he cut it off, and he’s itching for two things. The first is revenge, and the second is to be reunited with his baby brother Daryl.”

When asked about the possible deaths this season, Hurd says, “It’s a brutal world. Every day is a life-or-death, make-or-break scenario, and I would not be surprised if some people didn’t make it through.”

We know everyone will not make it out alive this season, but we’re still only guessing as to who it will be.
