Last night’s episode of The Walking Dead was incredibly suspenseful, and in all honesty, made us a little uncomfortable at times. We’ll explain a little more in our Walking Dead recap.

At the end of the season premiere, we got a final shot of five guys standing in the prison’s cafeteria, and we learned that they all used to be inmates at the prison. After the episode finished airing, we were only left with two of them.

From the beginning, Tomas gave Rick a hard time, and his violent persistence that the prison belonged to the inmates was the main source of our discomfort. He kept us on edge, wondering if he would actually take a moment of vulnerability and harm Rick or the other survivors.

After much negotiation and bringing the inmates up to speed on the current state of the world, Rick initially struck a deal with the prisoners: Give Rick’s group half of their food, and Rick, Daryl, and T-Dog would help them clear out a cellblock to make their own. It seemed like a pretty fair agreement.

Tomas didn’t think so, though, and stewed about it in every scene, again making us even more uneasy about his presence. While working on clearing out walkers from the prisoners’ designated cellblock, Big Tiny gets a little nervous, and backs away, which results in him getting scratched by a walker.

Pleading for his life, Rick tells him there’s no hope, and Tomas goes to town on Big Tiny’s head, completely destroying him. If that scene didn’t make you anxious about Tomas, we don’t know what would.

However, Tomas made a couple of grave mistakes when fighting off the walkers, once by almost slicing Rick with his weapon when he swiped at a walker, and also by throwing a walker onto Rick, knocking him over.

Tomas’s response: “Sh– happens.” Rick’s countered by agreeing, and then in the most suspenseful twenty seconds of the episode, we waited for Rick to act.

Which he did, by driving his machete into Tomas’ head.

One of the other prisoners, Andrew, ran, and Rick chased him down until Andrew ran outside and became surrounded by walkers. Instead of letting him back in, Rick locked him outside, left to the walkers’ mercy. We’re still not 100% sure if Andrew died (but we did hear his screams), but does this action bring Rick down to someone like Tomas’ level?

And then there were two. Axel and Oscar are the only remaining prisoners, and Rick locks them into their cellblock. They’re unhappy, but T-Dog and Daryl help them realize it’s better than being on the outside.

Back in the survivors’ cellblock, Herschel’s life is hanging in the balance. Carol has taken the reigns as medic, since Herschel taught her a few things to help with the delivery of Lori’s baby. Herschel’s two daughters, Maggie and Beth, deal with Herschel’s injury in different ways.

Beth is preparing for his recovery (hemming one leg of his pants), and Maggie is coming to terms with his death. Both daughters, however, are relieved when he finally seems to wake up for a little bit. It seems like he might be in the clear.

There was a moment of panic though when Lori was giving Herschel mouth-to-mouth and he grabbed at her – we thought he was coming back as a walker and was about to turn Lori. (Which, it seems, a lot of fans would probably relish in Lori’s demise.) False alarm, though.

Carol showed her skills in the healing field, and it looks like we’ll see a little more of her in action as she continues to practice C-Sections on dead-again walkers. Oh, and one more thing:

Who was watching Carol from outside of the prison fences?

The Grimes family seems to be falling apart. Carl tried to help out by finding the infirmary (saying it was “no big deal”), but when Lori (appropriately) freaks out about him going through the prison on his own, he yells at his mom to “get off [his] back.”

We wanted to yell, “Stay in the cellblock, Carl!”

Poor Lori can’t catch a break. Her son seems to hate her, and when she thinks her husband is coming to talk about their relationship at the end of the episode, he’s really only coming to thank her for helping resuscitate Herschel.

Does Rick really hate Lori? He seems to treat her as just another member of the group, and someone he doesn’t really care for. He certainly doesn’t treat her like his wife. Does Lori deserve Rick’s cold shoulder?

Is Rick’s role as leader making him too ruthless?

Next week, we’ll be meeting the Governor and see much more of Michonne and Andrea (who we didn’t see at all this episode), and it looks like Merle is back! Check out the promo video.
