A lot of buzz surrounded the new season of The Walking Dead, and now it is finally back on our TV screens. The season 3 premiere set us up for a lot of exciting moments this season. Take a look at our Walking Dead recap, and tell us how you liked the episode!

The first five minutes of the show were completely unique – they featured pretty much no dialogue. We see Rick’s group searching through an abandoned house, and on his team he has Daryl, T-Dog, and Carl with a gun! Carl seems to be growing up this season.

We can only assume that the group has been at this for a while – searching houses for food and a place to say, but they seem to always be chased out by walkers. They’ve made it through the winter and it’s been a few months since we last saw our friends, which is obvious by Lori’s enormous baby bump.

We are also now aware that there are more walkers than previously thought, since Rick shared that everyone is infected, and it just takes any kind of death to turn someone. There was also a new opening sequence for the show, which featured many shots of the road which all led to the prison.

Not surprisingly, while taking a break from traveling on the road, the group discovers the prison when Rick and Daryl go hunting. Rick is smitten from the first time he lays eyes on the huge prison and deems it “perfect.”

Will the prison now be a sanctuary for our survivors?

They do a pretty good job of taking over the outer grounds of the prisons, with everyone helping out to pick off walkers. It’s obvious they’ve all had quite a bit of practice since the last time we saw them.

Rick is planning on making the prison their new home, calling it “a goldmine.” Herschel can set up farming and they have secure places to sleep. It seems like a pretty good deal.

A sense of community also seems to be strong with the group now, but Rick is still adamant about being the leader and making things work. He wants them to keep pushing until the entire prison is clear; they need to find more ammo and food.

There is also the constant tension between Lori and Rick – he’s being incredibly cold toward her – but does she deserve it? Lori doesn’t seem to be getting much love from fans.

Lori is also worried because she hasn’t felt the baby move, and she’s afraid it might die inside of her and turn into a zombie. She’s struggling because she knows Rick hates her, and Carl has sided with Rick. Her family is falling apart. This baby is her only hope, and it might not make it either. She thinks it might have been better if she never made it off the farm.

This episode of The Walking Dead featured a lot of zombie-fighting action, and it served as a set up for the rest of the season. They have to clear out the prison so they can make it their home and get settled. After clearing out one of the cellblocks, everyone starts to settle in nicely.

It was powerful to see how regimented the group has become in terms of searching buildings and gathering resources. We saw that in both the opening sequence in which no dialogue was heard, and when Rick, Daryl, T-Dog, Glenn, and Maggie were exploring the prison and cleaning out the cellblocks.

In the final few moments of the show, we see Rick, T-Dog, Maggie, Glenn, Daryl, and Herschel exploring more of the darkened areas of the prison when they are overwhelmed by a herd of walkers. Maggie and Glenn get split from the group, and Herschel ends up by himself. Unfortunately for Herschel, he runs into a walker that he thinks is dormant.

Then he gets his ankle bitten.

Rick, T-dog, and Daryl find him, and then get him to the cafeteria. Ricks hacks off Herschel’s leg below the knee in an attempt to save him from the bite killing him. Herschel passes out, and we see a group of people watching the whole thing. From the looks of it, these are inmates who have survived in the cafeteria of the prison because they were locked in.

It’ll be quite intense to see where this storyline takes us.

Not to forget her, we only saw a few brief glimpses of Michonne in this episode. She and Andrea have been on the run together all winter, and Andrea is sick. Michonne is helping scavenge for them, and Andrea just wants Michonne to leave her behind, but she won’t.

What a great way to start off the season. While some might think the episode was a little slow, we thought it was a great way to get us settled in for the rest of the season.
