The Walking Dead co-executive producer Greg Nicotero says that, like the comic series it’s based on, the show is heading towards a “major death.”

Spoiler warning!

In issue #100 of The Walking Dead comic series, Glenn faces his untimely demise at the hand of Negan, who was verbally introduced at the very end of The Walking Dead mid-season 6 finale late last year.

“If you read the comic book, you know we’re climbing towards a major death,” Nicotero recently teased to Empire Magazine. He also described the backhalf of the season as “relentless” and “heartbreaking.”

Indeed, Glenn’s death would be one of the most heartbreaking moves in the show’s recent history given that the character played by Steven Yeun has been a part of the series since the very beginning. After Rick, Glenn and Carl are the two characters who’ve been on the show the longest.

There’s just one issue: Glenn already kinda died. Showrunners faked us out in the middle of season 6 when they led us to believe that Glenn and Nicholas died together after falling into a pit of walkers.

After losing the trust of fans, showrunners now have an uphill battle: How can they convince viewers that Glenn’s death is real this time?

Obviously one option is for Negan to beat him to a bloody pulp. If your head is smashed in, there’s no chance you’re going to make it out of that situation alive.

Or, Glenn’s fake death is a hint that showrunners will be diverting from Robert Kirkman’s comic series to surprise us. It wouldn’t be the first time they diverted from the comic books in order to tell their own story, and even if they do save Glenn, it won’t be their last.

Let’s face it: It’ll be a mix of weirdness and sadness to see Glenn die twice. It’s weird because we’ll be skeptical and wonder why they had to fake us out in the first place. It’s sad because poor Maggie will have to go through the ordeal twice.

Do you think Glenn will be dying a second time?

Or will they pick someone else to fall to Negan?

The Walking Dead season 6 returns Sunday, February 14.
