Not only has an adaptation of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower novels finally made it to the big screen: The Walking Dead exec Glen Mazzara will be serving as showrunner on the TV show version.

The Dark Tower movie, directed by Nikolaj Arcel and starring Idris Elba as the Gunslinger, has received mixed reviews ahead of its Friday premiere.

However, fans of the book series who are worried that they’ll be disappointed with the movie should take heart, because the epic Stephen King saga is also headed to the small screen — arguably a medium much better suited to tackle the intricate source material and properly flesh out the rich universe(s) of the story.

Media Rights Capital and Sony Pictures Television are currently developing a TV series, with a planned 10-13 episode first season. And The Hollywood Reporter has now learned that it’ll be helmed by none other than Glen Mazzara, who should be familiar to genre fans not just for his work on The Walking Dead but as showrunner of the short-lived (but excellent) Damien.

Mazzara tells THR that he’s been a King fan for “decades,” and acknowledges that the TV show format is much better suited than a movie “to capture the complexity of Roland’s coming of age — how he became the Gunslinger, how Walter became the Man in Black, and how their rivalry cost Roland everything and everyone he ever loved.”

The Dark Tower TV series has not yet been optioned by a network, but we’ll keep you posted!
