Sweet quiznak! With less than two weeks to go before Voltron‘s second season hits Netflix, we’ve got a brand new trailer to mull over.

Did we say mull over? We meant obsess.

If you haven’t had a chance to check out the trailer for yourselves, you can do so below. We’ll be speculating on the course of Voltron‘s second season based on the brand-new footage, as well as discussing the season 1 finale cliffhanger. Consider this your spoiler warning, if you’re not up to date!

The first 30-seconds of the trailer offers a quick refresh of just what Voltron is all about, for anyone that might be experiencing it for the first time, before diving straight into teasing fans about what’s in store for our favorite Paladins.

And we’re just going to get this off our… ahem. Chests.

Right, back to business.

Zarkon sees all

Zarkon and the Galra were a considerable force opposing our heroes in the first season, but they certainly seem to be stepping it up another level in Voltron‘s sophomore outing.

“There is no place in the universe beyond my vision’s reach,” Zarkon informs us via a chilling voiceover, as the Paladins — seemingly reunited after being separated due to a wormhole mishap in the season finale — attempt to outrun him with little success.

After discovering that Zarkon was the original Paladin to pilot the Black Lion, it seems a reasonable escalation to see him so obsessed with capturing Voltron.

Per an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Dos Santos mentions that we’ll “see Voltron’s effect on the universe” in season 2. With Voltron, and the Paladins, remaining the singular threat to Zarkon controlling the universe, and solidifying itself as a symbol of resistance, it’s little wonder he’s single-minded when it comes to taking it out of the picture.

As to how Zarkon is tracking down the Paladins with such ease? We have a theory for that, but we’ll hold onto it for just a moment.

New allies

There’s been much speculation amongst fans as to whether Keith is fully human — though he appears humanoid. From his ability to activate Galran tech, which is biologically locked down, to his reaction to Quinteessence, to Zarkon remarking he fights like a Galran soldier, there’s no shortage of hints that Keith may not be quite what he seems on the surface.

This makes it doubly interesting that the potential Galran ally alluded to in the trailer is discovered by Keith, and is fighting alongside him. Could this mean there’s a familial connection between the two? It’d certainly capitalize on the groundwork laid throughout season 1 in an interesting way, and offer a glimpse into Keith’s lineage.

As for that Galran soldier? They’re not the first we’ve seen to resist and betray their kind. Thace, who appeared in Voltron‘s freshman season, sabotaged the Galra’s attempt to capture Voltron and assisted in the Paladins’ escape.

Could this be Thace’s return, along with an internal resistance in the Galran Empire, emboldened by the actions of the Paladins and Voltron?

Shiro, are you okay?

The first teaser for Voltron season 2 was admittedly light on Shiro content, which did little to ease fans’ worries, as his fate was a toss-up at the end of the first season.

Thankfully for our nerves, he featured heavily in this trailer, showcasing that he was intact — at least in body. With the Black Lion split between Zarkon and Shiro, we imagine it’s going to take more than physical strength to solidify a more permanent partnership. With all that Shiro has endured since the Kerberos mission, that battle of wills between the two may take its toll.

If the dying moments of the trailer are to be believed at face value, the two will come to blows on the astral plane, but whether the other Paladins are close behind remains to be seen.

And, of course, we have to talk Zarkon’s uncanny ability to track down the Paladins with precision accuracy. We said we had a theory, and we doubt we’re alone in it. Shiro’s cybernetic arm, a Galran weapon developed by Hagar, doesn’t seem the kind of thing they’d allow out of their sights — at least, not without a way to retrieve it.

We can’t imagine that will be something Shiro will allow to endanger the Paladins, should the theory be true and come to light. Does the showdown between Zarkon and Shiro come about because he has taken the fight directly to him, to remove the other’s from danger? We’ll have to wait and see when Voltron returns to our screens.

But really, Shiro, honey, are you okay?
