Earlier today, the BBC officially announced that Emmerdale actress Jenna-Lousie Coleman would be stepping into the TARDIS as the Doctor’s new companion in the seventh series of the show. While some readers in the UK may be familiar with her, to most fans she is a complete mystery. Take a look at some videos from Coleman’s body of work.

Jenna-Louise Coleman is a 25 year old actress from Blackpool, England. While auditioning for drama school in 2005, she landed a role in popular British soap-opera Emmerdale as Jasmine Thomas – a part she continued to play until 2009. The actress was nominated for many awards thanks to her performance in the soap – including Best Newcomer, Best Actress and Best Dramatic Performance at the British Soap Awards.

Take a look at a video from one of her most popular story lines below – but younger readers are advised that the videos contains references to drugs and violence.

Upon leaving the soap, Jenna was cast as “hard-girl” Lindsay James in BBC One Drama Waterloo Road, for nine episodes of the shows fifth series. She was 23 at the time, and described the experience of playing a schoolgirl as “surreal”.

Since the show, the actress has made appearances in BBC Four adaptation Room at the Top and Captain America: The First Avenger. Finally, we can expect to see the new companion in Titanic, a four-part mini series from Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes. She will play Annie Desmon, a “cheeky cockney.” The series will begin broadcast this Sunday on ITV in the UK.

So, as we can see the new Doctor Who star has a range of experience – but nothing that she can really draw on to bring to the TARDIS. What kind of role do you think the actress will play in the seventh series?
