Is there one place where you can find guns, video games, comedy and awesome special effects?

I am here to tell you that there is such a place of awesome in one Video Game High School. Continuing the recent trend of standout shows that exist outside the normal paradigm of broadcast and cable television, VGHS shows what dedicated film makers can do thanks to the leap forward in technology.

Video Game High School is a feature-length action comedy web series by Rocket Jump Studios, written by Matthew Arnold, Will Campos and Brian Firenzi and directed by Matthew Arnold, Brandon Laatsch and Freddie Wong. It is currently hosted on YouTube and RocketJump.com.

PLOT

When unknown loser Brian D defeats #1 celebrity FPS gamer The Law on national television, he is invited to the prestigious Video Game High School where pro gamers go to learn their skills. While there, he quickly falls in love with the captain of the Junior Varsity team and makes a couple of new friends. Unfortunately, The Law is also at VGHS and quickly goes about making Brian D’s life a living hell.

WHY I WATCHED

I came to this totally by accident while browsing around Freddie Wong’s channel (freddiew) and, come on, how could you not be intrigued by the premise of a High School where you learn about playing video games?

This show takes the high action you have come to expect from Freddie Wong’s YouTube with slick production values and a great story.

WHAT I THOUGHT

This show is great and probably the best and most inspired portrayal of gaming ever seen. VGHS takes these settings that we are familiar with – the new guy at a new school, first crushes, dealing with the resident bully – and finds entertaining new ways of showing us this conflict.

The world that the show offers a glimpse into is completely believable and readily accepted indeed. If you think about it, this is similar to the state of Esports in the East, especially in South Korea, though I do not know if they actually have video game high schools there.

The show is very funny but never over the top like it is trying to force laughs. It has its own slang which is particularly hilarious to learn and worth listening out for.
