The CW has announced a new web series starring Veronica Mars’ Ryan Hansen set to premiere this summer on the network’s digital-only studio, CW Seed.
Spinoff buzz surrounding Veronica Mars isn’t particularly new news, as both the CW president Mark Pedowitz and Rob Thomas originally teased spinoff plans a few months back. Today, though, we finally have the confirmation we need as well as details and the show’s title, Play It Again, Dick.
Before we get too excited about the Dick Casablancas magic that is about to unfold, we do have to say that this is not a spinoff in the traditional sense, but more of a spinoff to get a spinoff. Are you following us?
The CW described the series in a press release on Monday saying, “Play It Again, Dick stars Ryan Hansen as himself, as he begs, cajoles, and pleads with his former Veronica Mars cast mates and friends to help him get his character, Dick Casablancas, his own spinoff show.”
So while this is a scripted show, it is not set in the Veronica Mars universe. Play It Again, Dick will be co-written by Rob Thomas himself, so even though it’s not a direct spinoff per se, we’ll still be getting all that Rob Thomas dialogue and charm.
If you are having doubts about the series, the show’s premise is completely about Ryan interacting with his former cast mates. In other words, lots of guest appearances from people like Kristen Bell, Jason Dohring, Percy Daggs and pretty much anyone who has ever been on the show.
