“We Used To Be Friends” by The Dandy Warhols has been covered by Alejandro Escovedo for the upcoming Veronica Mars movie. Check out the new version below.

Entertainment Weekly unveiled the song exclusively on their website this afternoon, dubbing it a more “mature” and “soulful” rendition of the original. You can listen to the updated version here.

Opening with just an acoustic guitar and Alejandro Escovedo singing the opening line, “A long time ago, we used to be friends…” it’s already a stark difference from the original.

The Veronica Mars theme song is no stranger to the makeover treatment. It was already remixed for the third season of the show. Instead of the upbeat, alt-rock original, it was slowed down to a more dark and almost dreamy electronic version.

Rob Thomas is a fan of having the theme song grow with the characters. After the third season premiered, he was quoted saying, “The previous titles were such a high school aesthetic. It would have felt silly to me to… go back to college with the same sort of look.”

Maybe after seeing the film, the audience will get in the same mindset as Rob and understand that he couldn’t go back to the original high school version of the song for the movie as well.

For all the Veronica Mars purists out there, here’s the original version of “We Used To Be Friends” by The Dandy Warhols.

What do you think of the new version of the theme song?

The Veronica Mars: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack will be released tomorrow, March 4.
