Hypable attended the Comic-Con Veronica Mars Movie panel today and wanted to share the best tidbits that came out of the panel. Read no further if you would like to avoid spoilers.

Entertainment Weekly’s Jeff Jensen moderated the panel which included Rob Thomas, Kristen Bell, Jason Dohring, Francis Capra, Ryan Hansen, Percy Daggs III, Enrico Colantino, Tina Majorino, and Chris Lowell.  Jason and Chris wore shirts that said Team Piz and Team Logan respectively.

The panel started off with exclusive footage that showed new scenes from the movie, behind-the-scenes footage, and Kickstarter details. Hall H went wild for the footage and the scenes look great. Jamie Lee Curtis seems to be in the film with an exclusive scene that was shown. Veronica is now a New York attorney who ends up facing Madison, dealing with a hilarious Dick, and some new mysteries back in Neptune.

The series was cancelled by the CW in 2007 and had some unresolved questions, which will now be answered in the film.

According to Rob Thomas, the film has a “Godfather 3 theme to it.” He confirmed that Veronica had not worked as a private detective since season three.

Kristen found out that Veronica Mars was cancelled the day before she filmed a scene in Forgetting Sarah Marshall, where her character’s show had also been canceled. Ouch. Too close to home.

Francis said that he’s wanted the Veronica Mars Movie to occur for a while and thanked the fans for all of their support. Francis said that the movie and the fans, “brought my family back.” Tina, rocking an awesome Mohawk, described the set as a reunion-type environment which mirrors the film.

Enrico dryly said that “it was easy” to fall back into the father-daughter back-and-forth that he and Kristen have mastered so well. The two are friends in real life and seem to have a close relationship. Ryan talked about the Kickstarter video which they shot at Kristen Bell’s friend’s house a year and a half ago. Kristen Bell’s fiancé Dax Shepard helped to construct the puppet set for the video.

Chris Lowell joked about the negative Veronica Mars fan interactions that he’s had as he was a divisive figure in the series. He joked that coming back his biggest concern was that “the death threats just stopped.” His character’s name Piz has stuck with him with his Prius almost being turned into a Piz. Jason Dohring talked about warmly about the fan interactions and the support that the Veronica Mars fandom has given him.

One fan asked about the transition for Veronica from an attorney to a private detective once more. Kristen credited Rob Thomas’ dialogue and his ability to write her voice. Kristen said that it was easy to jump into Veronica’s voice.

Deputy Sachs (Brandon Hillock) showed up in costume to ask a question of the fans. He polled the fans to see how many fans got into the series after its cancellation. The response, a ton of fans.

When asked about their favorite scenes from the series, Rob Thomas said it was the first Veronica and Logan kiss from the first season of Veronica Mars, which made him cry. Ryan Hansen revealed his Team Dick t-shirt and said that any scene with Jason was his favorite. His first line of the show was “Logan” accordingly.

Percy loved the “Snicker doodle” episode as that’s where he discovered the cookies. He worked mostly with Kristen and thoroughly enjoyed it. Enrico told the story of watching season three with his daughter and his pride in the character of Keith Mars.

When asked about the challenges of filming in such a short amount of time, Thomas credited the cast’s familiarity with their characters as helping the process while racing against the clock.

Jason said that the Echolls will not be appearing in the film despite their love for Trina (Alyson Hannigan). The rest of the Echolls happen to be dead, and ghosts (Harry Hamlin and Lisa Rinna) will not be appearing.

Thomas reiterated that he was proud of the show and that it “may be on his tombstone.” Thomas credited the film and series as being special in its magical combination.

When asked who taught Jason how to smolder, Kristen responded “the heavens.” Percy talked about how the chemistry of the film was critical with the entire cast. Kristen said that improvisation was not necessary for the series or film as “it’s already perfect on the page.”

When asked if Duncan (Teddy Kane) or Cassidy will be mentioned, Thomas responded that not necessarily. There will be Easter Eggs for the fans but did not want to have too much background mythology in the film in order to find new fans. Thomas promised fans that they would enjoy the film. “You’re going to see so many references and so many things that you get, that are special to you.”

When asked which other character they would play, Chris immediately repeatedly said Logan. Tina, Jason, and Kristen said Dick. Percy and Francis would want to switch characters while Enrico would want to play Vinnie Van Lowe (Ken Marino). Thomas would want to play Principal Van Clemmons.

Thomas mentioned the new two book deal for Veronica Mars and would love to be the next Bond franchise. The Veronica Mars Movie has two days left to film and wraps on Monday.

Hypable will be covering the smaller Veronica Mars Movie fan event on Friday night. 130 fans were lucky enough to get wristbands to attend the event which Kristin dos Santos from E Online! is hosting.
