The Veronica Mars movie is happening. Kristen Bell and Rob Thomas raised $2 million from fans, and as promised, Warner Bros. Digital Distribution will put up the money to make the film a reality.

Bell and Thomas said on Wednesday that the movie is aiming for a release date in early 2014 with a limited run in theaters. Following the theatrical debut, the Veronica Mars movie will hit the internet for digital download. Those who are backing the project (and you still can!) will receive a copy of the film.

The team had 30 days to raise the $2 million, but the goal was accomplished in an impressive 10 1/2 hours. The Kickstarter hit the goal minutes before 9 PM ET on Wednesday.

It seems like the duo knew that this dream would become a reality, because planning commenced before the Kickstarter even began. “One of our biggest challenges is coordinating schedules,” wrote Thomas. “We only have a few weeks to shoot and most of our cast members have additional obligations. We’re going to do our best to coordinate everyone’s availability, and we think we’ve figured out timing that works for most of the cast. We’re going to do our best to include as many of your favorite characters as possible (we know that’s important!) but it’s possible that some actors won’t be available during our shooting window.” The project appears to be aiming for a June – July 2013 shoot.

All fans who donate $35 or more will receive the film as a digital copy days after the theatrical debut. DVD and Blu-ray Combo Packs are also planned.

We’ll continue to follow developments surrounding the Veronica Mars movie as they’re unveiled. For now, we get to relish in the fact that fans rallied to raise enough money for the project. Will this set a precedent for other long lost shows and films that fans are clamoring for?
