America’s Got Talent returned tonight with the highly anticipated Vegas round! Here’s our recap of last night’s show.

The Vegas rounds mean one thing: it’s time to cut down the class of over 100 acts that made it through auditions to a much smaller 48. After reviewing the auditions again, the judges broke the acts into two groups: judges’ favorites and standbys. The judges’ favorites will get the first shot at the 48 spots and the standbys will compete for whatever spots are remaining. Those who didn’t make either list were told that they wouldn’t be performing in Vegas.

The judges brought these acts that were on neither list on stage to explain more to them. The Bandbaz Brothers, Charlie C, and Ivy Rose were told that their skill levels didn’t compare with that of the other acts and were sent home instantly. David “The Bullet” Smith, William Close, and the Olate Dogs were told that the judges didn’t need to see them again and that they were headed straight to the live shows. That leaves 45 remaining spots available.

The first groups to perform were the danger acts, and for these the judges were headed outside where either the sun is very bright or Nick Cannon looks like he just woke up. All Wheel Sports was up first, and it seemed like the focus was more on the acrobats and not on the actual act. The judges didn’t really like that. Next was the American BMX Stunt Team who had a very solid if not spectacular performance all the way up until the final biker crashed. The judges wondered whether or not that one error should be enough to send home a very prolific act. It’s probably one of the better bike acts to ever be on the show. New Guard America, the rifle drill team seemed to have a pretty flawless performance which we didn’t get to see any reaction from the judges. Cristin Sandu, the guy who balances on tubes, added significantly from his audition. It’s a very intense act to watch as it looks like he should fall, and often, but the guy has incredible balance. He’s the danger act to beat. Ben Blaque, the crossbow sharpshooter, did just about exactly what he did in his audition along with the addition of a shot where he shoots a balloon that is over the girl in his act’s head. He did this by facing the opposite direction, shooting over his shoulder, and is blindfolded. Howard thinks that is enough of an addition from the audition, but Sharon and Howie do not.

The next groups to perform were the female vocalists. Mary Joyner, daughter of Flo Jo and Al Joyner, was first to perform. Her pitch problems from her audition were an even bigger problem here, and it was clear that her range doesn’t go very high. Roxy Doll was next and we only saw a few seconds of her audition along with a confused face from Howie. Brianna Price followed with another very short clip. Cecilia Detwiler was up next with a slightly long clip than the previous two, which was long enough to see that she wasn’t that great. The judges commented on how it didn’t look like they rehearsed. Luna was very weak as she started, stopped very quickly in, and when she came back in she was so far off the note she was trying to hit that she was likely past the next note. The judges noted how she came on stage wearing flip-flops and showed no effort whatsoever. Luna was instantly sent home. She says she wants to “say something to those stupid judges.” The final female vocalist Nikki Jensen proves they saved the best for last. With a great rendition of the classic Rolling Stones song, “You Can’t Always Get What You Want,” she proves she is original. Howie wonders if America will take to someone that unique.

The dance groups were up next. Funk Beyond Control was up first followed by All That! who both go by without aired comment. Loyalty Dance Team was up next and the judges said it was about the same as their audition, but worse. 787 Dance Crew followed and their big mistake happened to be a boot to one of the dancer’s face. Howard and Howie debated whether or not the mistake matters enough to kick them out.

Up next were the novelty acts. Horse, better known as the King of Nut Shots, was up first. This time he included a bowling ball, a bike, and fire into his obliteration of his man parts. Howard says it’s funnier when he’s in his underwear and Howie thinks it’s possible he could win. All Beef Patty, the drag queen, was up next with a vocal performance that was better than many of the female singers that performed earlier. Joe Castillo was up next with another beautiful sand art-to-music performance. If he keeps this up he’ll go far in this competition. Todd Oliver & Irving, the ventriloquist and his dog, were funny but there’s something about the act that doesn’t feel right. Light Wire Theater did another pretty incredible light objects and creatures in the dark performance. They’re likely to go on. The Aurora Light Painters did another performance similar to their audition. The technology behind their act is more impressive than the act itself, and the judges think it’s the seed for a great idea which isn’t perfected yet.

The final groups to take the stage last night were the classical vocalists. Simply Sergio was very sick and says his voice is only at 30-40%. He seemed very weak and halfway through started to hum the song instead. Howard says that Sergio forgot the lyrics which Sergio denies. Howie finds it funny but hopefully Sergio will go home. Luis Meneghin was next and said that he’s done much better than that. Timing seemed to be the biggest issue. Andrew De Leon’s nerves got the best of him, which was really a shame because he has such a beautiful voice and it started out so well. Hopefully he gets to go through.

America’s Got Talent is back tonight at 9 p.m. ET/PT with presumably more from the judges’ favorites and possibly the beginning of the standbys.
