Wednesday night brings sad news for fans of HBO’s Veep.

The Hollywood Reporter announced on September 6 that Veep will officially wrap after a seventh and final season, due out in 2018.

In a call made to the outlet from series star Julia Louis-Dreyfus, the Emmy Award winning actress explained the reasoning behind wrapping the series up after seven seasons.

“It became clear that this season should be the last season,” Louis-Dreyfus told THR. “We don’t want to repeat ourselves or wear out our welcome. The story has a finality to it that feels end-of-series.”

Meanwhile, executive producer David Mandel echoed Louis-Dreyfus sentiments, adding that ending Veep after seven seasons just feels right.

“We don’t want to repeat ourselves or be boring,” said Mandel. “It’s bittersweet but it’s right.”

All in all, Veep certainly has a lot to be proud of. Over the years its been on air, the series has struck Emmy Awards gold multiple times.

To date, Veep has scored six consecutive nods in the best series category, and has won the award the past two years straight. Additionally, Louis-Dreyfus has won five Emmys in the outstanding leading actress category for her portrayal of Selina Meyer, and could potentially take home her sixth win in the category at this year’s awards.

As sad as we’ll be to see Veep go, the good news is that we’ve still got a 10-episode season 7 to go through before we have to say goodbye to the hit comedy series.

Additionally, if Mandel’s excitement is anything to go by, the cast and crew of Veep plan to go out with a bang.

“I’m so f—ing excited for what we’ve got on the board and for fans to see what we’ve cooked up,” said Mandel of season 7.

Production on the seventh and final season of Veep is set to start next month on October 16.

Veep’s seventh and final season is set to premiere sometime in 2018.
