The town of Mystic Falls just got more diverse! The Vampire Diaries has just cast two new characters, one of whom is gay, and another who’s a love interest for a certain vamp.

We’ve been curious about when The Vampire Diaries will start representing the LGBT community in some form, and we’re excited to tell you that it’s finally happening!

Chris Brochu will be playing Luke, a student at Whitmore college who bonds with Elena and Caroline but has a secret agenda. Delena, Stelena, Klaroline and Forwood shippers can take it easy this time around, though, since Luke will be the first gay character we’ve seen in Mystic Falls.

Meanwhile, Heather Hemmens has been cast in the role of Maggie, Enzo’s love interest. Earlier in the season we learned that Enzo had fallen in love with a girl named Maggie in the 1950s.

If you forgot his tragic love story, Enzo explains in episode 9, “The Cell”: “She wasn’t part of the torture and experiments. For the longest while, she didn’t realize Dr. Whitmore was doing more than just observing my behavior. I didn’t have the heart to tell her. I was just so glad of the company. When she finally realized what was going on here, she couldn’t bear it. So she said she was sorry and she left.”

We’re curious if Maggie will only be shown in flashbacks or if she’s somehow turned into a vampire in the past fifty years; it wouldn’t be the first time that we thought a character was dead when in reality they were actually a vampire.

We’re also wondering what Luke’s secret agenda is, but we hope we don’t lose him any time soon! E! Online explains that Maggie will appear first in episode 19 and that she’ll be in several episodes, but leaves no hints about Luke’s future. We’d hate to get the first LGBT character on The Vampire Diaries just to have him suffer the same fate as Aaron Whitmore!
