Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets is being adapted by Luc Besson, with Cara Delevingne and Dane DeHaan in the lead roles. Here’s the first teaser trailer!

The movie, which also stars Rihanna, Clive Owen and Ethan Hawke, is based on Pierre Christin’s French graphic novel Valérian and Laureline. The two main characters, the titular Valerian and Laureline, are a pair of intergalactic space cops traveling through a vast and colorful universe.

Luc Besson has literally been working on this adaptation for decades, and the dedication has evidently paid off — the teaser trailer is absolutely gorgeous:

In an interview with EW, Besson explains the purpose of the evocative teaser, saying that he wanted to show off the universe as opposed to setting up the story:

“Our mission for the teaser was very simple. We said, ‘It’s not about the story. Today, let’s introduce the two protagonists, Valerian and Laureline, and let’s the audience a flavor of the universe. Let’s give an ambience, let’s give a color.”

Besson, who previously directed The Fifth Element and Lucy, confesses himself “super excited” if “a little bit nervous” sharing the teaser with the world.

“It’s like being a chef in the kitchen for six months. You just want the patrons to come in so you can serve them. You want them to eat! I can’t stand it anymore to have all this food to myself!”

Well consider this a feast well served, because we are officially on board for this breathtaking space adventure!
