Universal Studios Hollywood’s Jurassic Park ride might be an iconic part of the park, but after September 3, 2018, the ride will close to make way for Jurassic World.

Back in 1996, Universal Studios Hollywood opened their Jurassic Park ride. It was a huge event, and those of us who are old enough can likely remember the huge marketing push that the park did to promote the immersive journey into a world of dinosaurs. That final, watery drop just under the gaping, roaring maw of the T-Rex is almost synonymous with the park.

The entire ride was a river ride through the park while you encountered several animatronic dinosaurs. To a modern park visitor, it might seem more low-tech than other options at the park, but it was such an iconic staple of the park that it didn’t matter.

Well, all things must come to an end, and so must the Jurassic Park ride. Your last chance to experience the ride will be September 3, 2018, at which time it will close to make way for the new Jurassic World ride.

As the teaser trailer informs us, a brand new ride is headed our way in 2019. But don’t worry, the ride’s format isn’t being scrapped altogether.

The Universal Studios website explains this new ride will still have the river raft format with the big drop at the end. However, the dinosaurs encountered will be updated to match the ones you see in Jurassic World.

In addition to some “regular” dinos (crossing our fingers that we get to encounter Blue), visitors to Jurassic World will get to experience the Mosasaurus dive for her tasty snack of an entire great white shark. However, things will go awry when the Indominus Rex escapes and destroys the park. Thankfully, the T-Rex will come to park goers’ rescue and save visitors from the dinosaur hybrid just before they plummet down an 84-foot waterfall.

This ride sounds like it will be a ton of fun, and while it will be a much more updated experience, the heart of what made the Jurassic Park ride exciting is still going to be there. We can’t wait to see what Universal Studios Hollywood has in store for us when the Jurassic World ride opens in 2019.
