Fifty Shades trilogy author E.L James and movie studio Universal are teaming up once again to adapt the author’s newest novel, The Mister.

Even if you’ve never touched a romance novel in your life, chances are you’ve heard of the Fifty Shades trilogy by E.L. James, which began with 2011’s Fifty Shades of Grey.

Despite being universally panned by critics, the originally self-published book went on to top best-seller lists around the world and set a record in the United Kingdom as the fastest-selling paperback of all time. The sequels, Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed, were published in 2012 and were similarly successful, catapulting E.L. James to Forbes’ 2013 list of the highest-earning authors with earnings of $95 million.

Universal snatched up the movie rights to the trilogy after an intense bidding war in 2012, releasing Fifty Shades of Grey on February 13, 2015, Fifty Shades Darker on February 10, 2017 and Fifty Shades Freed on February 9, 2018. Though likewise panned by critics across the board, worldwide the series has grossed over $1.3 billion, making it the sixth highest-grossing R-rated franchise of all-time.

Now it looks like Universal is hoping that lightning strikes twice. The studio immediately grabbed the rights for E.L. James’ newest best-selling novel The Mister. The romance novel was on the New York Times Best Seller list for nine weeks and has sold in 33 territories/languages internationally.

The Mister tells the story of wealthy British aristocrat, Maxim Trevelyan, who inherits his family’s noble title, wealth and estates and all the responsibility that entails. It’s a role he’s not prepared for and one that he struggles to face.

However, his biggest challenge is fighting his desire for an unexpected, enigmatic young woman, Alessia Demachi, who’s recently arrived in England, possessing little more than a dangerous and troublesome past. Reticent, beautiful and musically gifted, she’s an alluring mystery, and his longing for her deepens into a passion that he’s never experienced and dares not name. Maxim is faced with protecting her from the malevolence that threatens her, as well as protecting his own secrets.

E.L James produced all three Fifty Shades films and will return to likewise produce this adaptation.
