An update to Universal Orlando’s website today appears to have accidentally announced that the Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Diagon Alley is opening on June 30.

A graphic for the two Wizarding World of Harry Potter lands at Universal Orlando touted an opening date of Monday, June 30 this morning. Soon after, the graphic was changed to say “Summer” instead of a specific date. You can see a screenshot of the now-removed lingo below thanks to News 13:

After this mishap, Universal’s official Facebook page issued the following statement:

Over the past couple of weeks the rumor mill and small clues have suggested that the opening date would be Friday, June 20.

We know for sure that a red carpet event will be taking place on June 20, but the question is whether or not Diagon Alley will be open to the general public that soon. Today’s accidental reveal likely means the earlier date is not true. However, soft (test) openings could be possible in the next couple weeks.

Universal has already announced Diagon Alley vacation packages which let guests visit as early as June 29.

The mystery around the opening date is a major departure from how Universal Orlando handled the marketing around Hogsmeade in 2010. For the original Wizarding World, the opening date was announced months in advance.

Why so secret this time around? Speculators believe that Universal wants to avoid the madness that was the Hogsmeade Grand Opening which tens of thousands of people turned out for. Wait times were hours upon hours and various parts of the Universal resort were flooded with lines like this:

Diagon Alley will feature a Gringotts bank thrill ride, a working Hogwarts Express train, new eateries like The Leaky Cauldron, two shows, a fire-breathing dragon, wizard currency to use in the Potter lands, and much more.

We’ll be at Diagon Alley next week to experience the highly-anticipated land. Follow us on Instagram and Facebook now so you can track all of our updates!
