Kate Beckinsale has signed on for Underworld: Next Generation, and Divergent star Theo James is also set to reprise his role!

Vampire warrior Selene’s adventures will continue in Underworld 5, The Hollywood Reporter has announced.

The franchise is back for another installment, which is set to focus on a new generation of vampires and werewolves as the eternal struggle between the races continues.

Although the movie was originally billed as a reboot, the return of Selene indicates that we’re looking at a sequel (which might close out Selene’s story and set up a new arc).

Theo James, who became a household name as Four in Divergent, will reprise his role as David from the previous installment, Underworld: Awakening (2012).

It has previously been reported that James’ character will be much more substantial in Underworld 5, and he is likely to take a more central role as the franchise evolves.

Cory Goodman (The Last Witch Hunter) is writing the script, with Outlander‘s Anna Foerster set to direct.

Foerster is, incidentally, the first female director set to helm an installment of the female-led Underworld franchise.

She joins the ranks of Patty Jenkins (Wonder Woman) and (potentially) Ava DuVernay (who is reportedly in talks to direct Black Panther), both female directors taking on big action movies.

Interestingly, the studio is also looking to develop a TV show based on the Underworld mythology, and is likely hoping to adopt the cinematic universe model which Marvel and DC are so effectively utilizing to grow their franchises.

Production on Underworld: Next Generation is set to start in October. No release date has yet been announced.
