Transformers fans will have not one, but two films to look forward to in the near future, as Paramount has announced it’s developing concurrent films.

What’s the only thing better than having one Transformers film on the way? Having two different Transformers films on the way!

At least, according to Paramount and Hasbro, that is.

The studio recently announced that it will be developing two Transformers projects concurrently — one with Murder Mystery and Zodiac writer James Vanderbilt penning the script, the other with John Wick Chapter 3 EP and Army of the Dead writer Joby Harold.

The franchise began with 2007’s Transformers and achieved peak box office heights with 2011’s Dark of the Moon and 2014’s Age of Extinction, which both made over $1.1 billion at the worldwide box office. However, 2017’s The Last Knight not only panned with critics, receiving an abysmal 15% on review aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes, it likewise made $400 million less than the previous two films in the franchise, raking in a worldwide gross of $600 million.

Perhaps those numbers are why, according to Deadline, the James Vanderbilt project will be based on the Transformers spinoff Beast Wars, in which the robots transform into robotic animals rather than cars, trucks and planes. In it, Cheetor becomes a cheetah, Optimus Primal is a Gorilla and Rhinox is a Rhinoceros.

As to the second project, while it hasn’t confirmed, there are rumors that the other project will be based in the Bumblebee universe, which was the 1980’s set spin-off starring Hailee Steinfeld. Bumblebee generated $468 million against an estimated production budget of $135 million, making it the least commercially successful Transformers film to date. However, with a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes — making it the only ‘fresh’ Transformers film to date — Bumblebee was far and away the most critically successful of all the films.

As the projects have just been announced, there are currently no directors attached to them. Both, however, will features brand new casts.
