Twitter has announced that they’re shutting down Vine, their popular, short-form video app.

In a surprise announcement posted to Medium on Thursday morning, Twitter announced that they’ll be “discontinuing the mobile app” in “the coming months.”

“Nothing is happening to the apps, website or your Vines today,” they write on Medium. “We value you, your Vines, and are going to do this the right way. You’ll be able to access and download your Vines. We’ll be keeping the website online because we think it’s important to still be able to watch all the incredible Vines that have been made. You will be notified before we make any changes to the app or website.”

The reason for shutting down Vine is unclear. The app/website has arguably been one of Twitter’s most popular spinoffs (right up there with Periscope, their live streaming app). It birthed hundreds of “Vine stars” — people who made names for themselves by creating entertaining 6-second videos.

Vine’s would frequently go viral thanks to how short they were. They were also very easy to create. As of December 2015, the app had 200 million active users.

The app can be credited with pushing Instagram into launching video features of their own.

Vine officially launched in 2013, shortly after Twitter acquired it.

Updates concerning Vine’s app and website will be posted on Twitter in the months ahead. For now, everything on Vine will continue to run smoothly. But at some point in the not-too-distant future, it’s all going away.
