The ABC serial drama Twin Peaks in development at Showtime is back on track.
Update 2 (May 15, 2015): Lynch took to Twitter Friday evening to confirm that he and Showtime have worked out a deal to move forward with the show. Moments after his remark, Showtime announced the news themselves and revealed they’ve ordered more than the originally planned nine episodes.

“This damn fine cup of coffee from Mark and David tastes more delicious than ever,” said Showtime president David Nevins in a statement. “Totally worth the extra brewing time and the cup is even bigger than we expected. David will direct the whole thing which will total more than the originally announced nine hours. Preproduction starts now!!”
Lynch will direct the entire season, but Showtime did not reveal exactly how many episodes they’re filming.

Update (April 5, 2015): Lynch announced Sunday he’s leaving the revival due to budget issues. He took to Twitter to make the announcement:

Following Lynch’s remarks on Twitter, Showtime issued the following statement:
“We were saddened to read David Lynch’s statement today since we believed we were working towards solutions with David and his reps on the few remaining deal points. Showtime loves the world of Twin Peaks and we continue to hold out hope that we can bring it back in all its glory with both of its extraordinary creators, David Lynch, and Mark Frost, at its helm.”
It looks like the project is very much up in the air at the moment.

Original story (October 2014): According to Variety, Lynch will direct all nine episodes of the new season of Twin Peaks which is expected to premiere in 2016.
The following teaser video confirmed the announcement on Monday morning:
Variety says that the show will pick up where things left off in the second season which aired in 1991.
Adds Deadline, Twin Peaks season 3 “will be set in the present day, more than two decades after the events in the first two seasons. It is expected to continue the lore and story of the original series, with Lynch and Frost committed to providing long-awaited answers and, hopefully, a satisfying conclusion to the series. It is unclear which actors from the original series will be featured in the followup.”
As noted in the teaser, the Twin Peaks revival will air 25 years after the series was running on network television.
Lynch and Frost actually teased the announcement last Friday:

Showtime’s Twin Peaks revival comes on the heels of rival network HBO’s huge success with their new drama True Detective.
