Lionsgate has announced a campaign in which new Twilight short films will be created by aspiring female filmmakers.

“Storytellers – New Creative Voices of The Twilight Saga” will give women who are aspiring artists the chance to create films based on characters in the Twilight series. The films will be developed and produced with Lionsgate, who will be spending a “significant” amount on these movies. The original cast isn’t expected to return.

The announcement was made via the New York Times on Tuesday evening.

The campaign to select the filmmakers and stories will be managed through social media, and the final five (or more) films will debut on Facebook in 2015. The contest will be run through Tongal, a service that allows brands and contestants to pitch and share ideas.

The contest’s voting board consists of several A-list names, including two that are closely tied to Twilight. Stephenie Meyer, Kristen Stewart, Kate Winslet, Octavia Spencer, Jennifer Lee (Frozen’s co-writer and co-director), Catherine Hardwicke (Twilight director), Julie Bowen, and Women In Film President Cathy Schulman are all on board.

Lionsgate says the movies will “include films based on a broad spectrum of characters from the Twilight universe,” and that the characters will be canon thanks to the use of The Twilight Saga: Official Illustrated Guide (the series’ encyclopedia published in 2011).

This is the first big announcement out of the Twilight fandom since Breaking Dawn, Part 2 opened in theaters in November 2012. Rumors of potential spinoffs had surfaced around the time the final film was in theaters, but they seemingly didn’t pan out.

Speaking to the New York Times, Lionsgate Vice Chairman Michael Burns said about what these films mean for the future of the fandom, “This is the just the beginning — a template, if you will. You can probably guess what might be coming next.”

We love the idea of giving aspiring female filmmakers a chance to create stories that have the potential to reach hundreds of thousands of viewers. We’ll be sure to follow this project in the months and years ahead.
