Paranormal spy thriller, The Rook, is going through a creative shakeup: Stephenie Meyer has exited the series, with Lisa Zwerling and Karyn Usher taking over as showrunners.

Meyer, who originally brought The Rook to Lionsgate via her production company, is stepping away due to creative differences. There were no statements from Meyer, Lionsgate, or Starz regarding the decision for Meyer to part from the project.

Stephen Garrett, who was set to showrun the series, has now moved into a role as executive producer. Lisa Zwerling and Karyn Usher have taken over showrunning duties.

The Rook is currently filming its first two episodes in London, and is in the earlier stages of production. The change in showrunners, as well as Meyer’s exit, is not expected to impact the schedule.

“We’re pleased to have Karyn and Lisa leading our creative team on The Rook and to see our collaboration with Lionsgate and Liberty Global reach fruition,” Starz President of Programming Carmi Zlotnik said. “We have incredible showrunners, great directors, a talented cast, and an amazing property that reflects the strong and growing line-up of high-profile premium series that we’re bringing to our audiences.”

Zwerling and Usher have a long-standing deal with Lionsgate. They have produced several shows, including Kick-Ass for Showtime and Demons for Hulu, with the company. The Rook is expected to fall under the same deal with Lionsgate TV.

“We’re excited to expand our longstanding relationship with the incredibly talented duo, Lisa and Karyn,” said Lionsgate EVP and Head of Worldwide Scripted Television Chris Selak. “They’re the perfect addition to the creative team leading this high-profile premium series in collaboration with our partners at Starz and Liberty Global. They will do justice to this thrilling story, and we can hardly wait to bring their vision of The Rook to fans.”

The Rook is based on the novel of the same name, by Daniel O’Malley. It follows Myfanwy Thomas, a woman who wakes up in London with no recollection of how she got there, and no way to explain the dead bodies surrounding her. She later discovers that she is a high ranking official in the Checquy, Britain’s secret service for people with paranormal abilities. Myfanwy then has to navigate the dangerous and complex world of the agency to uncover who wiped her memory and why she’s a target.

Emma Greenwell, Joely Richardson, Olivia Munn, Adrian Lester, Ronan Raftery, Catherine Steadman and Jon Fletcher are slated to star in the series. The Rook will air on Starz in the U.S., and across Liberty Global’s international platforms in 2019.
