The Vampire Diaries always provides an epic conclusion for its seasons, so what could be in store for the Mystic Falls crew in the season 7 finale?

Season 1 of The Vampire Diaries culminated in the death of the tomb vampires, including Anna, and the appearance of Katherine Pierce. In the grand finale for season 2, Damon was dying of a werewolf bite, Elena kissed him, Jeremy was resurrected, and Stefan left.

The Vampire Diaries season 3 finale had the epic showdown with the Originals, including Alaric, who didn’t make it out alive, and the death of human Elena Gilbert. The ending of season 4 featured Damon dying of a werewolf bite, Elena kissing him, Jeremy being resurrected, and Stefan leaving…wait…that sounds familiar. Bonnie also died in the season 4 finale which definitely didn’t happen in season 2!

Season 5 reached the epic level of the season 3 finale when both Damon and Bonnie “died,” and in the season 6 finale, our beloved Elena was taken away from us for a while (along with Liv and Jo who were taken permanently). With all of these epic finales, what will season 7 do that can measure up?

Let’s start with what we know. Bonnie has taken on the curse of the huntress, and has subsequently marked most of the people she loves: Caroline, Enzo and Damon. Damon may be her main target at the moment, but I wouldn’t be getting in her way if I were Caroline or Enzo, either. There is hope though! Damon and Enzo plan to go into the Armory to find the last “everlasting.” Once they have it, they may be able to break Bonnie’s curse.

The synopsis for The Vampire Diaries season 7, episode 22, reads as follows:

Despite their best efforts to help Bonnie through the harrowing predicament she now faces, Damon, Enzo and Caroline realize their options are running out and drastic measures need to be taken. With their only chance of saving their friend lying inside the Armory, Stefan breaks the news to Caroline that they may need help from an unlikely source – her and Alaric’s twin daughters. Elsewhere, Enzo keeps Bonnie preoccupied by bringing her back to their cabin but when his plan takes an unexpected turn, it’ll be up to Damon to make the ultimate sacrifice to save his closest friends.

Given what we have to work with, here are some predictions for what could happen in The Vampire Diaries season 7 finale. Let me know what your predictions are in the comments!

Nobody will die

No, not even you, Matty blue eyes. We’ve had some very bloody season finales for The Vampire Diaries, but I predict that this won’t be one of them. With the few characters that are left in play right now, I don’t see them taking anyone away quite yet. Everyone has a role to play that could be unique and valuable in The Vampire Diaries season 8, wherever it may take us.

The twins will open the Armory and siphon the magic out

When I first saw the picture at the top of this post, I thought “that can not be what Stefan’s hair looks like from the top.” Then I realized that it’s the twins with Caroline and Alaric and it all made a lot more sense. The synopsis confirms that the twins will help out, so this isn’t the most groundbreaking prediction, but I’m guessing that beyond just opening the door, they’ll be used to siphon whatever magic is hanging out in the Armory.

From what we’ve seen of the Armory, post vault monster, it’s not a pretty place that I would want any of our heroes going into. If Lizzie and Josie are able to take away the magic, or at least confine it to the actual vault, Salvatore and co. will be able to enter, get what they need, and get out. Okay, so that is definitely not going to happen, but I do predict that they’ll be able to enter the Armory unharmed, due to the twins’ powers.

Stefan and Caroline won’t get back together…yet

It really is only a matter of time before Steroline is back to being the power couple that they’ve always deserved to be, but I don’t think they’re quite ready yet. Caroline is about to go through a crazy and potentially traumatic thing with her family, so the timing wouldn’t be right for her to leave them.

That being said, her and Stefan will have been on the run together for all of 5 minutes, and she will also be realizing that there really is no escaping the supernatural world, so I believe we will see the beginning of the Steroline reunion. My thoughts are that Caroline and Alaric will get far away as soon as Josie and Lizzie have done their part, but some heartfelt words will be shared between Stefan and Caroline that will lay the groundwork for what’s to come for them in The Vampire Diaries season 8.

Damon will be affected by the magic in the vault, and it’ll be tragic and awesome

The synopsis for The Vampire Diaries season 7, episode 22, says that “it’ll be up to Damon to make the ultimate sacrifice.” The ultimate sacrifice could be something very different, depending on who is doing the sacrificing. For Damon, I’d say this will either be his life or Elena’s life.

I don’t think it will be Elena’s life that he risks losing, because he’s already spent too much of season 7 pining over her temporary loss. Damon’s season 7 arc has been about discovering who he is without Elena, and learning how to do right by the other people that he loves, namely, Stefan and Bonnie. Everything he’s doing right now is to save Bonnie from the huntress curse, so she’s taken care of, but I predict that Damon will also have to take a figurative bullet, and risk his own life for Stefan.

I predicted that the twins would make the Armory safe to enter, but I don’t think they’ll be able to affect the actual vault where the magic was originally kept. Somebody must still be alive in the Armory, and I bet it’s Alex. She knows the mess that Bonnie’s in, and has a good chance of knowing how to fix it. She probably took the everlasting down into the vault, to use against Damon.

I’m sure once they’re in the Armory, chaos will ensue, and everyone who’s in there will be in danger, including Stefan. When Damon goes into the vault to retrieve the everlasting, he will have to cut some sort of deal with Alex to get the everlasting and save Stefan’s life. Through his actions in the Armory, Damon will finally become the hero, and sacrificial person that he’s capable of being, and he’ll realize that he doesn’t need Elena’s presence to be good.

All of this epic heroism and realization will happen just in time for Damon to be infected with whatever curse befalls those in the vault, and he will be back to the amazing, villainous Damon that everyone misses from season 1. At least then he’ll have something to blame for all of his bad decisions!

Bonnie will forgive Damon, and finally read the letter

That damn letter has been haunting us for way too long to not be read in the season 7 finale! Unfortunately, I think we’ve almost seen the end of huntress Bonnie, and she will either come to her senses (not the huntress ones), or Damon will succeed in freeing her from Rayna’s burden before he succumbs to his own curse. Seeing the lengths that Damon is willing to go to for her, she will grant him the forgiveness that he’s been craving. Tragically, he probably won’t be able to accept it, at that point.

With her best friend lost to the vault curse (for now), Bonnie will finally break down and read his goodbye letter, and we’ll finally know what he wanted to say to her! Do I think it’ll be a romantic confession of undying love? No, I really don’t. However, I think it will be extremely heartfelt and touching, and a testament to the beautiful relationship that has grown between these two characters. Damon seemed to think that it would make up for everything, so it’d better be good!
