Matt Mitovitch has reviewed another fall TV show, the anticipated ABC drama Pan Am! Did it raise his spirits? Or was it a bumpy ride?

Pan Am is of course riding on the wings of Mad Men‘s success (okay, enough with the flying puns now), set in the 1960s and following the crew of a plane in the revolutionary Pan Am airline company. One of the stewardesses is Cristina Ricci, and there are spies and scandals and other s-words.

In the TV Line review, Matt Mitovitch is generally positive about the show, although he notes that Cristina Ricci “is given little to do in the pilot,” and calls the espionage subplot “clunky.” That is about it as far as criticism goes, however.

Mitovitch calls the drama “fun,” and assures readers that this show is not trying to be a copy of Mad Men. He says of the show’s feel:

Part of its thrill comes from revisiting a time when air travel was something you got dressed up for […] the vibe I got upon multiple viewings was far more Titanic, with the luxurious Clipper Majestic’s crew and passengers full of wonder as they engage in this shiny-new journey.

He goes on to talk about the cast, and points out that the recasting of Dean (Jonah Lotan was replaced by Mike Vogel) seemed like the right move.

All in all it sounds like a fun, airborne Grey’s Anatomy type drama, with the added bonus of seeing the characters engage with historic events. Will you be tuning in when the show premieres September 25th?
