Disney+ is rebooting the beloved classic Turner and Hooch into a series, and has just found its leading man in former Nickelodeon star Josh Peck.

There have been a lot of great buddy cop movies, but none that have been as adorable as the 1989 comedy film Turner and Hooch. Starring Tom Hanks right at the cusp of mega-movie stardom, Turner and Hooch was the story of Detective Scott Turner and his unlikely partner of Hooch, a big, adorable, slobbering Dogue de Bordeaux. Turner winds up with the dog — the titular Hooch — after the murder of his friend, and though desperate to get rid of the dog at first, eventually the two bond and are able to solve a case of murder.

And while the original 1989 Turner and Hooch may have been met with a lackluster response from critics, it was a hit at the box office, grossing $71.1 million against a $13 million budget and making every kid who watched it (along with a few adults) desperately want a Dogue de Bordeaux of their own.

Despite its popularity, the beloved film has never had a reboot or a remake — until now.

Variety announced back in December that a Turner and Hooch series was in development at Disney+, and now according to Deadline, Josh Peck will play U.S. Marshal Scott Turner, a version of the character portrayed by Tom Hanks in the movie. His character will be similar to Hanks’ version, and is described as “an ambitious, buttoned-up U.S. Marshall” who likewise inherits the dog through a series of misadventures, again similar to the Tom Hanks version.

Though Josh Peck’s rise to fame came from his 3 years starring turn as Josh Nichols on Nickelodeon’s Drake & Josh, Turner and Hooch will represent his first major TV role in since starring in Fox’s Grandfathered sitcom opposite John Stamos four years ago.

Burn Notice creator Matt Nix is set to write and executive produce the reboot series, with Josh Levy from Bones serving as co-executive producer.
