HBO has released a trailer for their upcoming crime series True Detective, and the talent involved is fantastic, to say the least.

In addition to featuring the talents of Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson in front of the camera, the series will benefit from having acclaimed director Cary Fukunaga behind it. Fukunaga, who has helmed such films as Jane Eyre and Sin Nombre, is something of a favorite in the more arthouse crowd. But see for yourself, with the minute-long trailer below:

True Detective tells the story of a 17-year search for a Louisiana serial killer and the entangled lives of two detectives hunting him. Nic Pizzolatto, an award-winning novelist before transitioning into screenwriting recently, has previously written on The Killing and will serve as the head writer of the series which Fukunaga will direct. McConaughey and Harrelson will be joined by a supporting cast that includes Michelle Monaghan (Mission: Impossible III), Kevin Dunn (Veep), and quite a few talented up-and-comers, including Alexandra Daddario (Percy Jackson).

The trailer does an excellent job of showing all we can hope from the series and more more. From Funkunaga’s trademark gorgeous imagery, to the acting pedigree, to the terrific use of the 28 Days Later theme, True Detective has the potential to be truly great. A procedural that appears to be at-once thrilling, disturbing and uniquely strange, comparisons are sure to be made with New Zealand’s terrific 2012 miniseries Top of the Lake starring Elizabeth Moss, and if it’s anywhere close to as good, we’ll be in for a real treat.

‘True Detective’ premieres January 12, 2014 on HBO.
