It all comes down to this. True Detective’s freshman season wraps tonight on HBO, and some are wondering if we’ll get the answers we’ve been looking for.

One thing’s for sure about True Detective: The journey has been captivating. Led by actors Matthew McConaughey (now an Oscar winner) and Woody Harrelson, season 1 of the detective drama has offered a dramatic look at a long-standing case that has had countless victims.

Theories have run rampant over the past few weeks as we’ve inched closer to the show’s conclusion. One of the major questions that needs to be answered is, “Who is the Yellow King?” While some have had fun with this question by suggesting that it’s a person right under our nose, others have speculated that the “King” may not be a person like you would assume.

Since last week’s episode didn’t offer up many answers other than what we saw at the very end, some are starting to think that tonight’s finale may not wrap up all of the story lines. We know that season 2 will follow an entirely different case and feature different actors/actresses in the lead role(s), so season 1 may be left open ended.

True Detective has been about the journey, not the destination (as Variety’s Brian Lowry put it this afternoon), so no matter what happens, we will be able to look back on many fantastic episodes.

The synopsis for tonight’s True Detective finale reads, “Despite being 17 years ago, Cohle and Hart manage to find a new lead in the murder enquiry.” The episode is titled “Form and Void.” Check out a preview below:
