True Detective‘s third season has had a director shake-up, according to Variety. Jeremy Saulnier has exited the show after two episodes.

Jeremy Saulnier had been expected to direct three episodes of the upcoming third season. Scheduling conflicts were cited by HBO as the reason for Saulnier’s exit.

In Saulnier’s place, Daniel Sackheim (The Americans) has joined the series. Sackheim will be dividing up directing the remaining six episodes of True Detective season 3 with executive producer Nic Pizzolatto. This will also mark Nic Pizzolatto’s directorial debut.

“Director and executive producer Jeremy Saulnier has completed the first two episodes of True Detective Season 3 and will be departing the production due to scheduling issues. Daniel Sackheim has come on board as a director and executive producer for the series alongside series creator and director Nic Pizzolatto,” HBO said in a statement.

Per Variety’s sources, Pizzolatto and Saulnier are said to have had differences of opinion on the episodes. However, on the whole, HBO were happy with the scripts for the third season.

According to Deadline, “Season 3 of True Detective will tell the story of a macabre crime in the heart of the Ozarks, and a mystery that deepens over decades and plays out in three separate time periods. Ali will play the lead role of Wayne Hays, a state police detective from Northwest Arkansas.”

Mahershala Ali and Carmen Ejogo will lead the ensemble cast of True Detective season 3.
