True Detective series creator Nic Pizzolatto says that the sophomore season of his beloved HBO drama will be led by a trio of characters.

Pizzolatto made the revelation during a new interview with To The Best of Our Knowledge. “Right now, we’re working with three leads,” he said. To go out on a limb, this comment suggests that the show will have three lead detectives, not just three characters.

He also made a couple comments about where True Detective season 2 will be set – something he did once before. “It takes place in California. Not Los Angeles, but some of the lesser known venues of California and we’re going to try to capture a certain psychosphere ambiance of the place, much like we did with season 1.”

“The characters are all new, but I am deeply in love with all of them,” he added. “We have the entire season broken out, and I have a couple of scripts, and we’ll probably start casting within the coming month.”

The comments come on the heels of a report last week that said Jessica Chastain is in talks for one of the lead roles. The report was quickly denied by HBO and reps for the actress.

However, True Detective season 2 is expected to have at least one female lead. In a separate interview in March, Pizzolatto teased that the show will feature “hard women” and “bad men.”

Season 1 of the drama starred Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, and it was set in Louisiana. Since the series is an anthology, each season will follow different characters and locations.

HBO has not set an air date for True Detective season 2, but we expect one to be nailed down once the show begins filming. We’re hoping that season 2 will premiere early in 2015.
