Tonight True Detective episode 5 premieres on HBO, and a preview suggests another big storyline for viewers.

True Detective season 1, episode 5 titled “The Secret Fate of All Life” will see Cohle and Hart’s 1996 case come to a close, if the synopsis is of any indication. “With the murder solved, Cohle and Hart celebrate,” reads the preview. “However, back in 2012, they are shown new evidence by Gilbough and Papania.”

A video preview shows that the present day cops seem suspicious of Cohle, who at one point says to them they “need a warrant” for a yet-to-be-revealed reason. Even Hart appears to be surprised by their interest in Cohle, despite the fact that the two ’96 detectives stopped speaking to one another a while ago.

Tonight’s episode appears to be a turning point. Since the season only has eight episodes, it’s logical to assume that this back half of season 1 will be different from the first half.

Last week’s episode of True Detective included a 6-minute sequence at the end that was discussed on the internet endlessly in the days that followed. We watched Cohle take out person after person seamlessly in an attempt to capture someone who could get them closer to Reggie. You can watch the sequence again below:
