HBO debuted its first real trailer for True Blood season 7 last night, and the footage gives us a sense of what the final episodes will be about.

The 30-second preview is narrated by Sookie who’s concerned about lack of support from the government when vampires have seemingly ravaged their city. “There was an attack at the church tonight,” she says over new clips. “They’re saying it was the sick vampires, that they came out of the dark, and now they’re ambushed. How can this be happening in this country in this day and age that our government would leave us for dead? Now the good folks in this town are turning on each other, acting like animals.”

It’s interesting that True Blood season 7 will namecheck a lack of support from the government and FEMA specifically because, arguably, it’ll be a topic that’s relevant in today’s society. The show has tied itself to hot topics over the years including subtle references to America’s acceptance of minorities (which may be the case in season 7).

Notably absent in today’s trailer is an appearance from fan-favorite character Eric. Even though there was debate over whether or not the character died in season 6, showrunners confirmed that he will be a season regular in the final season. Whether he will be his usual self or some sort of reincarnation is yet to be seen.

True Blood season 7 premieres Sunday, June 22 on HBO. A teaser trailer with no footage from the season was released earlier this month and makes light of the fact that True Blood will die this season – the same fate many of its characters have faced over the years.
