Luke Grimes is leaving True Blood before season 7 begins filming because he does not like the way show runners are taking his character.

TV Line reports that Grimes, who plays James on the HBO vampire drama, asked to leave the show because he would be working less with his Forever co-star Deborah Ann Woll who plays Jessica. “When he started reading the scripts for Season 7, he was disappointed to learn that they were going in a completely different direction with James,” a source told the television news website.

Added HBO in a statement, “The role of James is being recast due to the creative direction of the character.”

True Blood’s James character was first introduced during season 6 when he met Jessica at vampire camp. The actor’s off-screen friendship with Woll appears to have been a major factor in the actor taking the role.

There’s no word yet on who will replace Grimes, but with production set to begin in the next few weeks, show runners will have to make a decision soon. At this time we also don’t know what the character of James will be doing in season 7.

In our opinion, Grimes should’ve stuck with the role because it is the job of the actor to remain committed to the character and project. Especially when there is only one season of the show left.

True Blood season 7 is expected to premiere in the summer.

The actor will appear in the book to film adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey next year as Christian’s brother Elliot.
