When we recapped True Blood’s season 7 premiere last Sunday, we wondered if a certain actor left the show because of what we thought they were doing with his character.

We’re learning today that our suspicions were right.

A report from BuzzFeed confirms that actor Luke Grimes left True Blood after season 6 because he didn’t like that they were making his character, Jessica’s boyfriend James, have a gay storyline in season 7.

So what happens with his character in the episodes ahead? Spoiler warning.

In the season 7 premiere, which aired earlier this week, James spent time with Lafayette, and the former hinted at a special relationship with a male friend in his past.

According to BuzzFeed, “Grimes objected to the first few scripts he received [of season 7], once it became clear that his character would become romantically involved with Lafayette. He countered that he would be willing to play the role if Lafayette were attracted to him, but not if the attraction was mutual. He also did not want to do any same-sex kissing or sex scenes. The writers were unwilling to change the scripts on his behalf.”

Grimes’ publicist says that his departure had to do with scheduling and cited several projects to BuzzFeed like his role in Fifty Shades of Grey. In addition, the publicist said Grimes did not know what was in the scripts prior to leaving the show.

So who do you believe? Grimes or BuzzFeed? If the latter is right, then questions should obviously be raised about how Grimes should be handling his acting career.

When the actor left the show in December, HBO said that he was departing because of the “creative direction of the character.”

True Blood season 7, episode 2 airs this Sunday on HBO. In the weeks ahead we’ll get to see exactly what James is up to with Lafayette.
