The first images have been released for director Wally Pfister’s next film, Transcendence, starring Johnny Depp, Morgan Freeman and Rebecca Hall.

Wally Pfister has been a cinematographer for director Christopher Nolan for many years, and he won an Oscar for his work on Inception in 2011. Now he’s directing his latest film, Transcendence, which stars Johnny Depp, Morgan Freeman and Rebecca Hall.

The film’s official synopsis was finally released earlier this week and reads: “Two leading computer scientists work toward their goal of Technological Singularity, as a radical anti-technology organization fights to prevent them from creating a world where computers can transcend the abilities of the human brain.”

Entertainment Weekly has released the first two images from the film seen above and Pfister says, “It’s a very timely subject as we find we have to update the software on our cell phones before we can even make a call.”

While it’s nice to see Johnny Depp taking on somewhat of a normal role, Depp’s character actually gets uploaded into the mainframe, “becoming a ghost in the machine after he’s attacked by anti-technology activists.”

Despite the unique story, Pfister says, “I don’t think we’ve seen him [Depp] this way in a long time, just a pair of glasses on and a pretty normal haircut.”

We have to say, it is refreshing to see Depp in some normal clothes and without makeup. It’s been quite a few years since he’s just been himself on the big screen (we’re ignoring The Tourist and The Rum Diaries since everyone else did).

Transcendence has a solid cast which also includes Paul Bettany, Kate Mara, Cillian Murphy and Clifton Collins, Jr. Transcendence’s release date is set for April 18, 2014.
