Legendary producer Jerry Bruckheimer says a sequel to Top Gun is in the works.

Top Gun 2 will be a follow up to the 1986 classic starring Tom Cruise, who is expected to return for the project.

In an interview with the Huffington Post, Bruckheimer revealed that Top Gun 2 is a reality that’s moving forward slowly but surely. “We’ve been trying to get that movie made for 30 years, and I think we’re getting closer and closer,” he said. “Don [Simpson] and I tried to develop something, we didn’t succeed. [Tom] Cruise took over, and he tried to develop something, and he didn’t succeed. Now we’re back at it.”

What can we expect to happen within Top Gun 2? A modern twist. “The concept is, basically, are the pilots obsolete because of drones. Cruise is going to show them that they’re not obsolete. They’re here to stay,” Bruckheimer said. “It’s just getting to the starting place. Fortunately for Tom, he’s very busy, so you have to find a slot he can fit into and get a budget that Paramount feels they can make the picture.”

No release date is set for Top Gun 2 because there are still several steps that need to happen beforehand. For example, the sequel does not have a director, additional cast members, or as Bruckheimer notes above, a budget.

Nonetheless, the news is good for those who enjoyed the original, which pulled in $179 million domestically and $177 million abroad. Top Gun was directed by Tony Scott, who died in August 2012.

Do you think the time is ripe for ‘Top Gun 2’?

Top Gun starred Cruise alongside Val Kilmer, Kelly McGillis, Anthony Edwards, and Meg Ryan.
