Maverick is officially going to be back in action this summer when Top Gun 2 starts filming in July of 2018 in preparation for its July 2019 release date.

We’ve been promised a return to the danger zone for several years now. Talk circulated pretty heavily back in 2013 or 2014 about a Top Gun sequel, and Tom Cruise officially announced that the sequel was officially titled Top Gun: Maverick back in 2017. However, we only recently learned that filming will start in July of 2018 for its July 2019 premiere.

Top Gun: Maverick will star Tom Cruise, and will focus on Maverick’s life in the military since the events of the original film. As he revealed to Access Hollywood, Cruise said that much like the original Top Gun, Maverick will also focus on the Naval aviators’ need for speed, featuring amazing, fast planes, and will have a competition aspect just like the original movie.

While we don’t what that means in actual movie plot terms, it seems like they’re trying to recapture the excitement of being Naval fighter pilot in Top Gun: Maverick. Of course, a big part of that magic isn’t found in the jets, it came from the cast itself.

Apart from Cruise himself, it’s not clear who else from the original films will be returning for Top Gun 2. However, Cruise has said that key members from the original cast will be coming back to the sequel. It is reported that Top Gun composer Harold Faltermeyer is set to return, so whatever the adventure, it will be set to Faltermeyer’s iconic score.

Top Gun was a commercial hit when it originally released in theaters in 1986, and has become an ’80s classic. So while the stakes are high for the sequel of such a beloved film, it will be fun to see what Maverick and the other pilots from the Navy’s Fighter Weapons School have been up to. We can’t wait to learn more about the film once shooting starts in July!
