Here are the top five tastiest tidbits we teased out of the new synopsis for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2 – plus our theories for the future!

Synopses aren’t always exciting, but we have to admit, ABC’s new summary for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2 definitely left us with a few tasty details. Here’s our list of what we learned – in descending order, because like a certain Scottish scientist, you have to work for what you love.

5) Everybody hates S.H.I.E.L.D.

To be fair, this isn’t exactly a revelation – no one was super subtle about the fact that S.H.I.E.L.D. had become synonymous with HYDRA by the end of last season. But the danger which Coulson and his team are in seems especially potent now, as emphasized by the scary dark figures trooping through the first trailer for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2.

And it doesn’t look like things will ease up for Team Coulson any time soon. With his organization “discredited and made to look like the enemy,” the newly-appointed Director will find himself faced with a dangerous task. “The world now views S.H.I.E.L.D. as untrustworthy,” the synopsis says, “and it’s Coulson’s job to change that opinion.”

(Did anyone else hear the words “Or die trying” at the end of that sentence?)

4) Enter Lance Hunter

Team Coulson is definitely getting a new regular member – but it isn’t, as many had hoped, the indomitable Agent Triplett. (Actor B.J. Britt will continue to guest star on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2, but alas, has other acting commitments elsewhere.)

But the crew will not go long without a Specialist. A British fellow named Lance Hunter (Nick Blood) will be joining the team as hired muscle – emphasis on “hired.”

Described by the synopsis as a “dashing mercenary sharp shooter with a quick wit,” Hunter’s uncertain loyalties will toss yet another ball into Coulson’s juggling act. “Since he didn’t rise up through the ranks,” ABC teases, “Does he have an ulterior motive for helping out the team?”

3) Coulson keeps on carving

It looks like the chilling (and currently inexplicable) final scene of last season will not be a one-time occurrence. According to the synopsis, Director Coulson will continue carving those creepy alien symbols into various surfaces – almost certainly a side-effect of the GH325 drug used to revive him.

The synopsis says that Melinda May “will continue to look after Coulson” through the pseudo-artistic insanity, which is some comfort. (And of course, we would expect nothing less of Her Awesomeness!) Still, we can’t help but wonder how Coulson is dealing with this bizarre manifestation. If the strange symptoms continue to grow, what choices will the Director and his right-hand agent be forced to make?

2) Ward is in the doghouse… for now

According to the synopsis, our favorite agent of HYDRA (you know what we mean) has been “locked up away from the world and his former teammates.” But though Ward seemed like more of a taunting memory than an active presence in that tantalizing promo, the synopsis promises that “this isn’t the last we’ve seen of him.”

Hopefully that hard-core beard of his checks out soon, though.

1) Heaven help FitzSimmons

Okay kids, it looks like there’s good news and bad news for Fitz and Simmons in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2. The good news is, the situation hasn’t changed. So if you had night-terrors of Fitz punching his ticket during the hiatus, you may now sleep easily.

The bad news is… well, the situation hasn’t changed. “All did not go well for Fitz,” the synopsis soberly informs us, confirming what many fans had speculated over the summer. The brilliant engineer “was left in a coma and may never regain his full cognitive functions.”

And Simmons hasn’t escaped unscathed either. Fitz’s condition is, unsurprisingly, “a devastating blow” to the sunny bio-chemist, but the synopsis does not divulge any further details.

Oddly, there was a brief shot of the duo working together in the aforementioned preview, which seems not to jive with Fitz’s reported incapacitation. Is the synopsis misleading us? Could Simmons be imagining her partner’s presence? Is Fitz a robot?

Seriously, anything seems possible at this point.
