The Downton Abbey season finale airs tonight at 9 p.m. GMT on ITV, and the house is preparing for Lady Rose’s upcoming wedding to Atticus Aldridge!

Previously on ‘Downton Abbey’…

Cora discovered the truth about Edith’s sudden departure from Downton last week, and that she has a third grandchild. She traveled to London to find her wayward daughter and encourage her to return, but concocting another convoluted plan that we can hardly believe fooled anyone. Also in London, Lady Mary (with the help of a well-timed kiss from Charles Blake) finally drove Gillingham back into the arms of Mabel Lane Fox. It seems that she’ll be taking neither suitor for her husband, and we may be seeing someone new on the scene by season 6.

As Lord Merton’s sons managed to singlehandedly ruin dinner with their future step-mother, Atticus took the opportunity to turn the whole evening on its head — by proposing to Lady Rose. It may be rushed, but we really love these two together.

The synopsis for ‘Downton Abbey’s’ finale

Everything is coming to a head in the season finale, according to the synopsis from ITV. There’s no hints about whether Isobel really will become Lady Merton, but there’s no shortage of drama — both upstairs and downstairs. We knew it was too good to be true that Anna and Mr. Bates had finally found some peace.

It reads: “Preparations are underway for Rose’s big day, but family tensions on both sides threaten to derail proceedings. Edith’s arrangement with Marigold is happily working out, but how long can she and Cora conceal the truth from Robert? In London, Denker reveals an unexpected side to her personality, which causes trouble for more than one of the servants. With the war memorial due to be unveiled, Mrs Patmore is still upset but Robert has something up his sleeve. Meanwhile, Branson has come to a heart-wrenching decision and the storm clouds that have been gathering over Anna and Bates finally burst.”

We really hope that Robert has some happy news for Mrs. Patmore regarding the war memorial — it was heartbreaking to see her wrecked by the news of her nephew still being classified as a deserter, and left of the memorial in his own town. Actually, can we just have everyone end the season happy for once? Pretty please?

Promotional stills for the ‘Downton Abbey’ finale

Once again there aren’t many promotional stills for the episode, but what little we have doesn’t bode well for Anna or Mr. Bates. We also have some new faces coming to the cast, and Denker is shown too. We’d love to see some more downstairs action in the finale — there hasn’t been nearly enough of it this season!
