The penultimate episode of Downton Abbey airs tonight at 9 p.m. on ITV, and the truth of Lady Edith’s “shocking” departure may be revealed to the family.

Previously on ‘Downton Abbey’…

On last week’s episode of Downton Abbey we saw Edith finally learn the truth of Michael Gregson’s fate, and after very little sympathy from her family, exposed the truth of daughter Marigold’s birth to the Drewes — before whisking her away to London so they can finally live a life together.

But that was far from all. Romance continued to blossom between more than one couple, even if some of those advances were terribly disguised as “business ventures,” and this week could lead to wedding bells for multiple pairings. We could be seeing a Christmas episode packed with happily ever afters. Check out our full recap for episode 6 here.

Synopsis for ‘Downton Abbey’ season 5, episode 7

According to the synopsis for this week, we’ll be seeing the return of Rosamund in light of Edith’s departure from Downton. Will she be leading the search for her niece and little Marigold, or will she reveal the scandalous truth to the rest of the Crawley family?

It reads: “Rosamund arrives at Downton following Edith’s shock departure; will her secret finally be exposed to the family? Meanwhile, Rose is delighted to introduce Atticus and his parents to Downton for the first time. Downstairs, Molesley is concerned to see Daisy becoming disillusioned with her studies, and hatches a plan to bring her around. With the worst of their troubles seemingly over, Anna and Bates start thinking about life outside Downton. Isobel makes a happy announcement, but there may be trouble ahead. Violet has her hands full with her warring servants and Mary and Blake seize an opportunity to send Gillingham a strong message.”

Could this also really be the end of Anna and Bates’ troubles? We hardly think so. The sergeant and officer from Scotland Yard are remaining persistent in their investigation of Mr. Green’s death — despite the revelation that Mr. Bates wasn’t responsible for his untimely demise. They better make those plans and fast.

Promotional stills for ‘Downton Abbey’ season 5, episode 7

The promotional stills don’t give away much ahead of the episode, and seem to be focusing on dinner with the Aldridge family — and a bonus Lord Merton. Lady Violet better start picking out her finest hat for the wedding.

We’re feeling a little anxious that ITV aren’t giving away much from the rest of the episode — this is the last before the finale next week, and we may be building up to a crescendo, or a cliffhanger, before the long wait until Christmas.
