Tonight Grey’s Anatomy season 11, episode 6, “Don’t Let’s Start,” is airing a special episode with the goal to raise awareness about homeless veterans.

It’s not unusual for the ABC drama to use episodes to bring awareness to different topics. And tonight, Shonda Rhimes has decided to use Grey’s Anatomy to show its fans what being a homeless veteran looks like.

To do this, “Don’t Let’s Start” will follow a case of a homeless veteran who comes to Grey + Sloan Memorial Hospital after being carjacked and losing all of her belongings. Rhimes got the idea after seeing a tweet from the White House about a drop in homeless veterans.

But Rhimes didn’t stop there. She contacted First Lady Michelle Obama to discuss how she could help bring awareness about homeless veterans. The episode will feature resources available for homeless veterans.

Speaking about the episode, Rhimes said, “I really wanted to use the episode to highlight both the importance of remembering and respecting the sacrifice of men and women who served and illuminating some of the challenges veterans face upon coming home.”
