We loved Tom Felton as Draco Malfoy, but so many of his roles since Harry Potter have been villainous. When will we finally see him play a hero?

If you’re a Harry Potter fan, chances are that Tom Felton is among your top three Harry Potter actors whose work you’re most excited to see. It’s also very likely that you’ve been frustrated that his appearances in blockbuster films almost always boil down to Malfoy-like characters.

But the most memorable scenes of Felton’s performance as Draco Malfoy were the moments in which we glimpsed good in him: his uncertainty at the prospect of having to kill Dumbledore, and his fear in the face of Voldemort. Although he was excellent at playing the spoiled, rude Draco, he truly shone in Draco’s vulnerable moments, as Harry discovered that Draco was much more human than he thought.

Not only was Felton’s performance as Draco spot-on in the Harry Potter films, but he’s also a genuinely nice person. From his wholesome Instagram posts, to his film Tom Felton Meets the Superfans, to his great sense of humor in interviews and his ever-present gratitude to the movie series that brought him fame, Felton is a great guy all around, and we’ve always wanted him to succeed.

However, whether it’s out of his own choice or the fact that he’s being typecast by studios after his role as Draco Malfoy, Felton has only really seemed to play villains when he’s starred in high-profile films, such as Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Belle and A United Kingdom. And while he did play Julian Albert on The Flash, he wasn’t completely free of ties to evil there, either… even then, he spent a great part of the show as an antagonist.

Worse, he hasn’t even had a chance to be the main villain of a film yet. Like Draco, most of his characters have been antagonistic, cowardly characters that don’t hold much weight in the plot but serve to move it along in some way.

There’s a lot of hope for the future, though! YouTube Premium’s new original series Origin follows the story of 11 people who wake up in a space ship after all the crew and passengers have left, and are forced to discover what happened to survive. And it doesn’t only star one Harry Potter actor, but two! Natalia Tena stars as one of the main characters alongside Tom Felton.

In the Origin panel at San Diego Comic-Con, though, Felton quickly dismissed any possible parallels between his new character and his famous old one:

“One was a wizard with crap parents, the other one is a petty drug dealer from California. I really could not line those up in any situation. I suppose they might look somewhat similar. My eyes are still the same color. Other than that, I wouldn’t really draw too much of a comparison. He’s not the friendliest person in the world, I suppose we could say that.”

It doesn’t seem like the characters have much in common, but even though a petty drug dealer seems to be far from a good guy, Felton also asserted that while his character is “a bit of an American scally-wag,” he also has “a good heart.”

Many sci fi shows start on the premise of a character with a dark past becoming a hero: Felton might finally be able to dedicate a whole season — or more — to being a main character, worthy of thorough character development. Success for Origin could mean success for its starring actors, and might finally give Felton a chance to show off his acting versatility.

Out of all the young Harry Potter stars, Felton was the first to become a familiar face in blockbuster films, even if it was in minor roles. Hopefully, we’ll continue to see him in big roles in big movies… this time as characters that are vastly different from Draco Malfoy.

Origin premieres on YouTube Premium later this fall.
