In a slightly puzzling turn of events, it has been announced that upcoming Tom Cruise flick One Shot has received a title change!

The movie will now be called Jack Reacher, the name of the project’s lead character that Cruise will be portraying in the film. The move is a strange one, as One Shot — as it was formerly called — is an adaptation of a 2005 novel by Lee Child. The change in title means that distributor Paramount will have to market the movie to both newcomers and the readers who may not recognise the film without the familiar title.

While no reason has been given for the change, The Hollywood Reporter states that Cruise referred to the project as “Reacher” while at a Cinema convention in April, so the move is at least partly predictable. The distributor will be hoping that the main-character-title will be more Harry Potter than John Carter in term of box office revenue.

Jack Reacher tells the story of an ex-Army cop who becomes tangled in a conspiracy after a sniper is arrested for gunning down five people.

The film will be released this December.
