Those posters you’ve seen depicting Tom Cruise flying on the outside of a plane for Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation aren’t kidding — he actually did that.

In an age of using special effects to create wow-factor moments, many would assume that these posters of Tom Cruise flying on the side of a plane — like the one pictured below — were created using CGI. Nope! That’s a real shot of Cruise flying on the side of an airplane up in the sky.

The stunt was first revealed at CinemaCon earlier this year (You may remember we wrote about it at the time), but now the studio has released a behind-the-scenes look at Cruise pulling off the scene… and it’s stellar:

In this new featurette we get to see the raw footage of Cruise flying on the side of an aircraft for a scene in the new Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation. We see that Cruise wears special goggles in his eyes to prevent things from flying into his sockets and is “scared shitless” as he takes off:

Cruise said at CinemaCon that he did the stunt multiple times, and that the plane would fly up to 5,000 feet for each take.

The superstar is always looking for a cool way to surprise audiences, and this stunt definitely doesn’t disappoint. “I do these things… I want to put the audience on their edge of their seat,” Cruise said at CinemaCon. “It gives the audience a different feeling when it’s practical.”

The only problem with this trick is that it may ultimately go under appreciated by the masses. Anyone who looks at the poster around town will assume that it’s CGI. We should all take a moment and appreciate the fact that Cruise did something that very few actors in Hollywood would be willing to do today. Thanks, Scientology?

Misson Impossible: Rogue Nation opens on July 31.
