Tolkien fans are holding their breath hoping the final Hobbit movie bears some semblance to the book they love. But what do you get the Tolkien fan who seems to have everything this Christmas? Here are some ideas.

Maps of Middle Earth

Every epic fantasy needs to have an awesome world that is rich with detail. Part of those details include maps so readers can track the journeys and quests that their favorite characters undertake. In other words, where is Rivendell in relationship to Hobbiton? What is the terrain like between between Gondor and Rohan? How long does it take to get between points A and B? A lot of the time you want to look at the text and map side-by-side. With lots of people now rereading their favorite Tolkien books in electronic format, fast forwarding to the map and then back to where you left off in the text isn’t as easy as it seems. In fact, it’s kind of annoying.

So, why not get a beautifully illustrated Map of Tolkien’s Middle Earth and the problem is solved, not to mention you now have some beautiful artwork.

Whimsical Figurines

Now, whereas The Lord of the Rings trilogy is much more of a mature saga, The Hobbit, at its core, was intended as a children’s adventure story. Sure there’s plenty of detailed, and frequently expensive, figurine artwork associated with both series, but why not put that aside for the moment, and go for something a little less high-brow. Everyone wants something on their desk at work or school that they don’t have to worry about knocking over and smashing. They want something that puts a smile on their face when they are having a tough day.

Nothing fits that bill more than the classics of the the bobble head or Funko figurine.

There are a lot of choices out there, but in particular the Wacky Wobbler Bilbo Baggins Bobble Head does look an awful lot like Martin Freeman as these things go. Give his head a tweak and watch him bobble. Above all, avoid the Tauriel Bobble Head if you have a die-hard book fan to buy for. You’ll likely be met with a glower of rage.

‘The Hobbit’ LEGO Collection

It is a rule that you are never too old for LEGO. Let’s face it, the LEGO Movie wasn’t a smash hit just because eight year olds were going to see it. There’s something really satisfying about opening that box, whipping out the step-by-step picture guides, and building your fantasy recreation. When it comes to The Hobbit there are currently seven choices available ranging in price and complexity from the Witch-King Battle to the Lake Town Chase. Now, if you’re concerned about keeping your book and movie fans happy, you want something that has classic characters of a wide variety and a great setting. The best best is The Lonely Mountain set which has details such as: the secret door into the lair of Smaug, Smaug as an enormous fire-breathing dragon, digging deep for gold with the tools in the mining area, and a staircase trap!

The best part about The Lonely Mountain is that it will provide the opportunity for a group project since there are lots of pieces and multiple sets.

Apparel

Obviously there is official merchandise for almost every Hollywood blockbuster film. You can pretty much bank on the face of the movie’s hero, Photoshopped possibly into unrecognized plasticity, plastered all over a variety of tee shirts. The Hobbit doesn’t disappoint, as you can find the faces of Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen, and Richard Armitage on just about anything. Now, the thing is, many people aren’t into the images of the actors. They have in their own heads what the characters may or may not look like, so this kind of merchandise doesn’t work for them. Fortunately, fandom tees can always be found over at Tee Fury or Redbubble that feature sayings and images that aren’t highly actor-centric.

If you want to really win over a die-hard book fan, get them a Never Judge the Book by its Movie tee, or maybe one that references Tom Bombadil.

Stocking Stuffers

There are lots of small items from The Lord of the Rings universe that make great stocking stuffers. For starters, there is a jewelry collection that has been around for years. Just be careful if you go that route because people either love or hate the idea of wearing the One Ring around their neck. Personally, I always thought it was an odd choice, but to each their own.

There are also some less controversial items, and one of the best places to look is the official Hobbit Shop. Some of the best stocking stuffer items that they feature are smart phone cases. There are options for both iPhones and Androids. One that really stands out features all the dwarves from The Hobbit.

Do you have any favorite Tolkien items to recommend?
