Netflix’s The Crown has officially found its new Prince Philip!

According to Deadline, actor Tobias Menzies has officially been cast as Prince Phillip in season 3 and season 4 of Netflix’s royal bio-drama The Crown.

Menzies will be taking over the role from Matt Smith, who portrayed a younger Prince Phillip over the course of the first two seasons of the series, which tells the story of the reign of Queen Elizabeth II.

Menzies is no stranger to period dramas. Outlander fans specifically will be all too familiar with the actors’ work given that he played both Frank Randall and Black Jack Randall in Starz’s hit adaptation of Diana Gabaldon’s best-selling series.

Outlander aside, Menzies has also been featured in HBO’s Rome, where he played Brutus, and on the premium cable network’s hit fantasy series Game of Thrones where he played Edmure Tully.

Menzies isn’t the only new cast member that’s been announced for the forthcoming third and fourth seasons of The Crown.

Earlier this year, we learned that actress Olivia Colman will be stepping into the role of Queen Elizabeth following Claire Foy’s exit. Meanwhile, Helena Bonham Carter will take over as Princess Margaret, following Vanessa Kirby’s exit.

Showrunner Peter Morgan was very upfront about his plans to recast the main players on the series from the get-go as the story progresses, and the characters get older. Even so, fans have been waiting to hear word of just who would be acting opposite Colman as the reigning Prince on the series.

We’ll be exited to see what Tobias Menzies brings to the part, although we have no doubt that he’ll make for a fantastic Prince Philip!

Netflix’s The Crown is set to begin production on season 3 this summer in the U.K.
