Denis Villeneuve‘s highly anticipated adaptation of the sci-fi classic Dune, gives us our first look at Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides.

Vanity Fair has dropped the first look of Timothee Chalamet’s next feature, along with an interview with the star of Dune.

According to Vanity Fair, the photo occurs at the start of Frank Herbert’s science fiction epic Dune, when the young royal, Paul Atreides, is preparing to leave the easy life he knows on his native planet of Caladan for an isolated, perilous mining planet known as Arrakis.

There, his wealthy family will oversee extraction of a spice that is integral to the rest of the galaxy. Little does he know that chaos and death await him on the Arrakis.

The Dune photo shows a transport ship preparing to descend to take Paul Atreides to the new planet, with Paul himself looking down at the ground, likely conflicted about the changes soon to happen in his life.

“The immediately appealing thing about Paul was the fact that in a story of such detail and scale and world-building, the protagonist is on an anti-hero’s-journey of sorts,” Chalamet said in his interview with Vanity Fair.

“He thinks he’s going to be sort of a young general studying his father and his leadership of a fighting force before he comes of age, hopefully a decade later, or something like that.” Chalamet continued of his Dune character.

At the point of Dune in which this shot takes place, Paul is being taught about war by a veteran soldier named Gurney Halleck, who is played by Josh Brolin.

Paul’s parents, Duke Leto and Lady Jessica Atreides, played by Oscar Isaac and Rebecca Ferguson respectively, have to be manage both the spice mining on Arrakis, but also, wider galactic politics.

Beyond the heavy fortifications on Arrakis, giant carnivorous sandworms have staked their claim on the world.

Living in this dangerous environment are the tribe of indigenous humans known as Fremen, who are led by Javier Bardem’s Stilgar and are afraid that their homeland will be pillaged by people they see as invaders.

Dune is set to be released by Warner Brothers for a December 18, 2020 release — for now.
