The trailer for Netflix’s upcoming feature film Tigertail is a deeply moving and highly relatable Asian immigrant story of love and family.

Writer-director Alan Yang shared the trailer for Tigertail on his Twitter this morning, saying, “Please share it with anyone who needs an escape for two minutes today, especially Asian-Americans, who are facing an unprecedented time in our history. This film is a love letter to my family and all of the Asian immigrants out there.”

The film follows a man as he reflects on the lost love of his youth and his long-ago journey from Taiwan to America as he begins to reconnect with his estranged daughter.

Check out the trailer for Tigertail below.

In this poignant multi-generational drama, Pin-Jui is a free-spirited yet impoverished young Taiwanese factory worker who makes the difficult decision to leave his homeland — and the woman he loves — behind in order to seek better opportunities in America. But years of monotonous work and an arranged marriage devoid of love or compassion leave an older Pin-Jui a shadow of his former self.

Unable to sympathize with his daughter Angela (Christine Ko) and at risk of living out his retirement in solitude, Pin-Jui must reconnect with his past in order to finally build the life he once dreamed of having. The story spans continents and decades, from 1950s Taiwan to present-day New York City.

Hong-Chi Lee plays young Pin-Jui, with Tzi Ma — who was recently in indie hit The Farewell and will play Hua Zhou in the Disney live-action adaptation of Mulan — playing the older Pin-Jui.

Tigertail is written and directed by Alan Yang, a former Parks and Rec writer and producer who went on to co-create the Emmy award-winning Netflix original show Master of None alongside comedian Aziz Ansari.

Tigertail features a supporting cast including Joan Chen, Yo-Hsing Fang, Kuei-Mei Yang, Kunjue Li, and Fiona Fu.

The film will debut on Netflix on April 10.
